It's Boxing Day, and the first EroLit event. Come to Sensual StoneWorks for readings of Adult Fairy Tales.
Most traditional fairy tales were originally meant for adults, and so although later tellings were cleaned up and toned down for the ears of children, in their original form they were very bawdy or horrifically violent.
As it is the time of year for fairy tales, we have put together some old favorites, but with a sexy twist to them.
the event is spread out through the whole day, and when there is not an EroLit member telling stories, you can always find a magic bottle with a story telling Djinn inside (give the bottle a rub), so look out for those strange copper coloured bottles.

Second Life for Beginners
I thought it would be a good idea to write a Newbies guide to SL.
I recently started a new Alt (alternate account) and was very disapointed with what LL consider a decent introduction for potential new residents. Just the very basics of how to move, how to chat in local, how to sit / use something, and then straight into the map room to be thrown unprepared into the deep end. a far cry from the Help Island that was available when i first joined.
Even that was pretty inadequate for preparing the uninitiated, but now it seems Newbies are hurtled into the grid totally unprepared.
Okay - you know how to move, how to talk to people you see, and how to sit on a poseball. What more do you need to know that is essential?
First off, I would say join a group. Groups will be your main contact for talking to new friends and finding out just how everything works, what you should look out for, and what to do when you have a problem.
Somne groups are specifically set out as help groups, and the best one i have come across so far is New Citizens Inc. Many of the members are actually very old citizens now - but everyone needs help some time, and those of us that have been around a few years like to be on hand to help new citizens.
Where do you go and what do you do? Second Life does not have a central plaza where everyone can meet - mainly because there are too many people using SL. there were a few such places once, but the vast numbers of avatars there were a huge strain on the servers, and if one of these stations went down, the others would become so crowded that there were cascade colapses.
Crowds cause lag, and too many people in one place can cause a sim to colapse so the start portal advice to just pick a place at random and start from there is just as good as any. What you do depends on what sort of place you have landed in.
What you need to be aware of is Second Life is not a game. it is a virtual world, a 3D environment for social interaction.
A lot of people do play games in SL - it is ideally suited for creating your own games, but you must be aware that most of the sims you visit are owned by people like yorself, and you are a guest. some areas aprivate and have a barrier that keeps visitors out, but most are open to visitors. What you need to remember is not everything is there for members of the public to use and interact with - you cannot just walk into a home and use the beds as if they were your own.
So what can you do?
There are sandboxes in many sims, where you can rez (put into the world) items from your inventory, create new objects, or take part in classes or events. There are a few things you cannot do in a sandbox. You cannot sell anything, and in most cases, you cannot use weapons. As i already said, SL is not a game in itself, so just because you have bought a flamethrower that shoots flames at people does not mean you can go around flaming people willy-nilly. weapons, bombs, traps etc are for use in consensual game situations - where a group of people have agreed to take part in a game. if you hastle or bother people without their concent, you are griefing them, and that can get you banned.
The same is true of sexual conduct. many people like to use SL for cybersex and erotic roleplay, but this can only be done on Adult rated sims, or in a private residence. do not proposition strangers for sex - unless it is a sim that allows that.
every sim has its rules - roleplay sims tend to have somewhat complex rules, so find out what the rules are before you rush in. often you will be given a notecard with the sims rules on it as soon as you land, so do take the time to read it carefully.
be polite. if you inadvertantly do something to get banned or ejected from a sim, apologise and politely ask why you were thrown out. do not argue with the admin or moderator. if they refuse to listen to your side of the story - then so be it. if they have the ability to eject you, then they have the right to eject you - theres no point in whining about it.
Money
money is even bigger than sex on SL. it has its own economy and currency - the L$. many things are free, but the best things arent, so you will most likely need L$ before long.
you can use your paypal account to buy L$ or if you have a premium membership to SL you will get a weekly stipend of L$300.
but if you cant afford to buy them (they really do not cost very much) and you are not a premium member, you can earn L$
Don't beg or ask people to lend you the money - it's a banning offence. do not try to sell items other people have made. this is copyright theft and not only against the rules, but actually against the law.
some people argue that if it's a freebie or set at full perm (full permissions) that it is automatically public domain and you can do what you like with it. this is simply not true.
of course, if you set up a shop you can sell things under license as an affilate in some cases, and you can use merchant resource items as part of your creations to be your product - but do check on user license.
best advice there is only sell what you have created, and use textures you have made.
of course, if you are a new citizen, you probably dont know how to create content yet - but dont worry, there are plenty of classes in SL that will teach you how.
another group worth joining is SLEdu Events - it will keep you informed of classes you can go to.
Hope this has been helpful to somebody - good luck and have fun

Classes are back on
I have begun teaching in SL again. There have been a few requests, so I ran a few classes which are proving popular. In fact, I now have two venues and may soon have a third.
I am still teaching at Sensual StoneWorks, but this time on Wednesday nights rather than the super-laggy Sunday. Still the same sandbox. You still need to be a group member to create in this sandbox, and you need to be Age Verified to enter the sim.
I also have a regular Friday night slot for Fruit Islands - mainly at Mango yaght club arena. This is a M rated land, so I can't run any of the Adult rated classes, but on the other hand you dont need to be Age Verified to get in - which helps.
Fruit Islands runs a lot of events, so you may wish to join the group so as to keep informed.

STEAM 4
We are now well into STEAM 4, the steampunk related gridwide hunt in Second Life.
I have two gifts again - one at Armada Breakaway, and another at Blaidd Drwg. actually, the hint and store is at Blaidd Drwg, but the actual gifty gear is high up in Nirvana coz there isnt enough room in Blaidd Drwg - but there is a handy teleport to get you there.
As Myrddin is a Timelord, and there are a lot of Doctor Who fans in the Steampunk group, I made both gifts Who related - the first is a teleporter / working clock that resembles the Master's TARDIS, and the second is a console room of my own design. it has the familiar six sided control console with a central power column, switches, dials, etc, and the walls have hexagonal roundels, so it looks sort of familiar, but does not reproduce any one particular design. well apart from the fact that the panel design is based on the console panels from the Attic TARDIS.
After the hunt is over, this Skybox will be on sale, soon to be followed by a few more variations.
When i figure out how to script it, I will make it a functional TARDIS rather like the ones at New London, or the old Gallifur console rooms.

the Time War
as Myrddin is a Gallifreyan cat, i thought i should try to flesh out some of the details of the Time War.
this is not easy, as it was never actually shown or scripted - there are merely references to it and the odd little scenes now and then in the End of Time.
what we know is the Daleks went to war against the TimeLords (or vice versa) and were on the brink of victory when the Doctor initiated some sort of super weapon that wiped out the dalek fleet and Gallifrey - after which he sealed the whole war in a sort of time bubble.
this was just after the daleks took what is referred to as the Cruciform - what that is exactly we dont know, but the Master was supposed to be protecting it, but ran away when the Daleks over ran it.
How did it begin? the daleks had a plan to eradicate the timelords using the doctor as far back as resurrection of the daleks. this is odd, as they were seriously weakened by this point, and couldnt even withstand a war against earth, let alone gallifrey. presumably they felt that a stealth attack on gallifrey would give them access to advanced technology. that was in 4590
by 4663 not only were they decimated by the movellan war, but they were also involved in a civil war, and in a desperate attempt to gain mastery over time (other than their crude time corridor technology) they attempted to obtain the remote stella manipulator - the hand of omega. it is unclear how they knew about it, but that was all part of the doctors plan to trick them into using it, and thus destroying Skaro. there were so few survivors that the doctor was able to convince the black dalek that he was the last. in fact, davros escaped - but even the doctor did not know that.
the Daleks executed the Master on Skaro in an unknown time period - it could have been before the destruction of Skaro - or it may have been on new skaro.
somewhere around the year 5000 the Daleks had regained strenth and were on the point of beating the humans - then they vanished. that is when they were recalled and all went to fight the time war.
why? why that point and not earlier? the war must have taken place much further ahead in the future, because the doctor would have known about it otherwise. he says he was too far into the future 10,000,000 years in the future so it maybe that the war takes place in this period. there are no dalek stories after 5000 in the original series, so one can preesume they all left for the war. they re-emerge in 200,000 but this is after they have travelled back in time and hung around waiting for a few hundred years.
It is debatable as to whether Gallifurs (furry timelords) are canon or not. It is mentioned in Mark of the Rani that the President had a cat. The Shoboggans in The Invasion of Time were created as a low budget alternative to Cat People. A story had been commisioned in which a race of Cat people warriors on Gallifrey feature greatly, but it was deemed far too expensive and grandios at the time, so parts of the story were recycled as the Invasion of Time. Could they have been in some way connected with the Cheetah People of Survival? We never knew how the Master came to be on that planet, or why he was without a TARDIS.
Cat people feature a great deal in the New Series too. Several of the Doctor's previous incarnations were very fond of cats - particularly the Sixth. It is odd that the Master was unable to resist the Cheetah World's influence. It is quite possible that on Gallifrey, humanoids (Timelords) evolved from cats rather than apes.
